Job Specification

The Opportunity

We are currently recruiting for an Engineering Team Leader to join a fast-paced FMCG manufacturing site in Boston.

This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced Maintenance Engineer looking to step into leadership while remaining heavily involved in day-to-day engineering activities. Unlike many Team Leader positions, this role is 80% hands-on engineering and 20% people management, meaning you'll still spend the majority of your time fault finding, repairing machinery, carrying out PPMs, and supporting production.

You'll lead a team of 2 engineers on shift, ensuring equipment reliability, minimising downtime, and driving continuous improvement across the site. This role offers a clear route into Maintenance Management for an ambitious engineer looking to progress their career.

Leadership & Team Management (20%)

  • Lead and support a team of 2 shift engineers
  • Allocate daily workloads and prioritise maintenance activities
  • Provide technical guidance and coaching to engineers on shift
  • Drive a proactive maintenance culture across the department
  • Support skills development and performance improvement initiatives
  • Conduct shift handovers and communicate effectively with production teams
  • Act as the first point of contact for engineering-related issues during your shift

Hands-On Engineering & Reliability (80%)

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) activities
  • Respond quickly and effectively to machinery breakdowns
  • Diagnose and repair both electrical and mechanical faults
  • Minimise downtime and maximise production efficiency
  • Complete root cause analysis on recurring equipment failures
  • Support installation, commissioning and upgrade projects
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and cost savings
  • Drive machine reliability and engineering performance

Electrical Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair faults on single and three-phase systems
  • Maintain motors, contactors, overloads, relays, sensors and control circuits
  • Fault find on automated production and packaging machinery
  • Maintain electrical distribution systems, breakers, isolators and fuses
  • Work with inverter drives, servo motors, encoders and PLC-controlled equipment
  • Support electrical compliance and site safety standards

Automation & Controls

  • Fault find on Siemens and Allen Bradley PLC systems
  • Support HMI troubleshooting and machine resets
  • Assist with automation improvements and control system upgrades
  • Work closely with specialist automation support when required

Health & Safety

  • Ensure all work is completed safely and in line with company procedures
  • Follow permit-to-work and lock-off procedures
  • Complete risk assessments where required
  • Maintain accurate maintenance documentation
  • Ensure compliance with current engineering and electrical regulations

Equipment You'll Be Working On

  • Industrial mixers and blending systems
  • Ingredient dosing equipment
  • Extrusion and processing lines
  • Forming and cutting machinery
  • Drying and baking ovens
  • Automated packaging lines
  • Flow wrappers and bagging machines
  • Checkweighers and metal detectors
  • Conveyor systems
  • Pneumatic systems
  • Hydraulic equipment
  • Compressors and site utilities
  • PLC-controlled production machinery

What We're Looking For

Essential

✅ Electrical bias preferred

✅ NVQ Level 3 in Engineering or completed Engineering Apprenticeship

✅ Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills

✅ FMCG, food manufacturing, packaging, or fast-paced manufacturing experience

✅ Experience working with PLC-controlled machinery

✅ Ability to lead by example in a hands-on environment

✅ Comfortable working in a role that is 80% engineering and 20% management

✅ Strong communication and problem-solving abilities

Desirable

✅ 17th or 18th Edition Qualification

✅ Previous Team Leader or Supervisory experience

✅ Siemens or Allen Bradley PLC experience

✅ Continuous Improvement experience
