Canterbury is a cathedral city of around 55,000 people in east Kent, and its jobs market is dominated by education and healthcare. Three universities sit in and around the city, and the East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust is the other large employer, so live vacancies lean towards academic, clinical, administrative and student-facing roles, with retail and hospitality concentrated around the city centre and the tourist trade.

Canterbury Christ Church University runs its main North Holmes Campus near the city centre, and the University for the Creative Arts has its Canterbury site on New Dover Road (CT1). The Kent and Canterbury Hospital on Ethelbert Road provides a steady flow of nursing, allied-health and support vacancies. Canterbury City Council is a significant public-sector employer, the Whitefriars centre in the core holds national retail chains including Fenwick, Marks & Spencer, Primark and Next, and lighter industry and trades cluster on the Wincheap and Vauxhall Road estates south-west and north-east of the centre.

On transport, Canterbury West is on the HS1 line, with Southeastern high-speed Javelin services reaching London St Pancras in about 55 minutes, and Canterbury East runs to London Victoria on the slower line via Chatham in roughly 90 minutes. The A2/M2 links the city to the Medway towns and the Dartford crossing. On postcodes, CT1 covers the city centre and the south side, CT2 the university and the north, and CT4 the villages to the south.
