Secondary QTS Tutor - Blyth

The Opportunity

You will be supporting students on a 1:1 or small-group basis who are not currently accessing full-time mainstream education.

Our students may have experienced permanent exclusion, multiple school moves, challenging experiences within mainstream settings or difficulties managing their SEND or SEMH needs. Some may display challenging behaviours, have low confidence, struggle with emotional regulation or have become completely disengaged from education.

Sessions will take place face-to-face in accessible community settings, such as youth centres, family hubs and community centres, as well as other suitable locations.

Your Role with Us

  • Deliver engaging 1:1 or small-group tuition in Maths and English, supporting students working towards GCSEs and Functional Skills qualifications (Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2).
  • Support students who have been permanently excluded, are at risk of exclusion or have become disengaged from mainstream education.
  • Develop and deliver personalised lesson plans that address individual learning gaps, abilities and educational needs.
  • Adapt teaching approaches to accommodate students with SEND, ADHD, autism, SEMH needs, anxiety and other barriers to learning.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with students who may have had negative experiences of education.
  • Use creative, flexible and engaging teaching strategies to encourage participation and improve motivation.

Role Details

  • Pay rate: Up to £30 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
  • Hours: Up to 6 hours per week per student.
  • Start date: November 2026.
  • Location: Blyth, Northumberland.
  • Duration: Ongoing, with the aim of supporting students towards successful reintegration into mainstream education or an appropriate educational setting.

To Be Eligible for the QTS Tutor Role, You Will Need:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS).
  • Previous experience supporting young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
  • Experience working with disengaged learners, students with challenging behaviour, school refusers or young people who have experienced permanent exclusion would be highly advantageous.
  • Experience within a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU), alternative provision (AP), specialist school or similar setting would be particularly beneficial.
